'Fifty Shades' helps Barnes & Noble in 1Q

NEW YORK (AP) ? Barnes & Noble says its fiscal first-quarter loss narrowed, lifted by sales of e-books and other digital content as well as sales of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series at its bookstores.

The largest traditional U.S. book retailer faces tough competition from online retailers and discount stores and has invested heavily in its Nook e-reader and e-books.

Barnes & Noble Inc. lost $41 million, or 78 cents per share. A year earlier it lost $56.6 million, or 99 cents per share.

Revenue climbed 2 percent to $1.45 billion from $1.42 billion.

Digital content sales rose 46 percent, while revenue from bookstores open at least a year increased 4.6 percent. The company also said Tuesday that Borders' liquidation helped its performance.

Its stock gained more than 5 percent in premarket trading.

eddy - Perineural Invasion | The Skin Cancer Connection Blog

Perineural invasion (PI) in skin cancers is a significant finding potentially requiring additional treatment. There are four levels of PI: perineural inflammation, minimal microscopic invasion of small nerves, larger nerve invasion, and invasion with clinical symptoms (pain, numbness, or motor deficits). With greater level of PI, there is a greater risk of recurrence, lymph node metastases, and distant metastases.

Neurotropism of cancer cells was at one time believed to be caused by the spread along perineural lymphatics. The current theory of perineural spread is based on the cleavage plane between the perineurium and the nerve ? an area of lower mechanical resistance to tumor spread.

Perineural spread is more common in tumors ?2.5 cm and in the head and neck area. The majority of perineural spread is < 1 cm while spread >2cm is unusual. The spread is believed to be continuous ? tumor ?skip areas? along the nerve are thought to be artifactual. However, some aggressive cancers can spread significant distance through perineural invasion as far as the skull base. In such cases the cancers also invade adjacent structures and can metastasize.

The incidence of perineural invasion for basal cell carcinomas is 1-6% and for squamous cell carcinomas 3-14%. Incidence is higher for spindle cell and adenosquamous cell variants. In fact, microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC), known for its silent subcutaneous spread, carries an 80% incidence of perineural spread.

The lowest level of perineural invasion is suggested by finding of perineural inflammation. Inflammation can be traced out microscopically to reveal perineural tumor cells in deeper sections. Several studies have shown that perineural in?ammation may serve as a marker for or even mask perineural invasion. This assertion is supported by the fact that over 60% of basal cell carcinomas exhibit moderate to heavy peritumoral infiltrate of helper T cells. Some authors have even suggested rapid immunohistochemistry staining with antihuman epithelial antigen (Ber-EP4) and cytokeratins to reveal BCC masked by inflammation.

The next level of PI is minimal microscopic invasion of small nerves <0.1mm. This is likely equivalent to the cases of perineural inflammation. Local recurrences rate with small caliber nerve involvement is up to 9%.

Large caliber nerve involvement by PI has been defined at ?0.1mm. The incidence of recurrence has been estimated as high as 50% and risk of death at 32%. Involvement of named nerves by PI is analogous to large caliber nerve involvement. Usually, large caliber nerve involvement is found in tumors larger than 2 cm, invading 1 cm or more, and poor histologic differentiation. 10-year local control rate of 62% has been reported.

Finally, perineural invasion with clinical symptoms of nerve involvement is another indicator of aggressive behavior and of poor prognosis. These symptoms include pain, numbness, paresthesias, and motor deficit. 10-year local control rate has been reported to be only 50%.

Treatment when perineural invasion is discovered must involve more aggressive surgery and occasionally radiation. When PI is found with Mohs surgery, removal of an additional surgical stage is recommended after tumor-free margins are obtained. Radiation therapy of the local area is indicated with larger caliber nerve (?0.1mm) or named nerve involvement. Radiation to the skull base or the involved cranial nerve ganglia is appropriate in these cases. Some argue to the futility of radiation because perineural tumor spread is slow and thus less amenable to radiotherapy. This decision can be modulated by the tumor behavior and its growth rate: the more rapid the tumor growth ? the more radiosensitive the tumor.

Perineural invasion can be an indicator of significant tumor extension, metastases, possible future recurrence, and decreased survival. In the first few years after treatment, close follow-up of these patients is required ? both with physical examination and with imaging.

Apple gets patent for process that replaces unwanted media with user content

DNP Apple patent aims to squash ads, replace them with your favorite tunes

If your favorite audio or video broadcasts are spamming you with obnoxious ads (or anything else you don't like) an Apple patent describes a process to cut them out -- then substitute your personal content. First, the system would check media in real time through audio analysis or metadata scanning. Then, it would determine if it's "of interest" to you by checking it against a profile based on your listening habits or personally defined preferences. Finally, if it thinks you're into a particular stream, it would continue playing it, and if not, it could blast something from your own collection. The patent claims even describe a TiVo-like time-shifting function -- ensuring you'd catch that entire guitar solo while not missing a single word from your favorite show.

Cake Yes, Party No

by admin on August 21, 2012

I was reading the post ?Your Hospitality isn?t needed but your Muffins are?, and it reminded me of what happened several years ago. When my daughter was younger, she went to the same daycare for about four years. The first year I invited everyone in her class to her party. (Invitations were put with the children?s belongings a month in advance) One parent RSVP?d and showed. The next year, (hope springs eternal) I invited everyone and a few RSVP?d and showed. (I promptly RSVP?d to every invitation my daughter received, and always brought a gift, or sent one when we weren?t able to attend.) The third year, no RSVP?s and no shows. After that I gave up, but something interesting happened a few days after the party. (I was fine with no one from the daycare being there; I had plenty of family and I always have plenty of food, and we had a blast.)

I had a message, garbled and obviously from a child on my voicemail at home. It was obvious that the child didn?t speak English well; all I could make out was something about cake. I shrugged it off. The next day, there was another message, still garbled but a little clearer. This child wanted some of the birthday cake that was left over! Thinking back, I had a pretty good idea who this child was. At the last party of another kid in the class, this kid had eaten nonstop and we all had to wait for him before we had the cake. His dad was there, and ate even more than he did. I thought, surely I?m mistaken. No way did this parent not RSVP or acknowledge this party in any way then have the nerve to allow their child to call me wanting the leftover cake.

Well, that?s exactly what happened. After the third message, I got the number off the caller ID (message was again garbled and from a child) and called. I spoke to the father and he openly told me that yes, his child wanted some birthday cake. Not one word about missing the party. Obviously they had my number; they could have RSVPed! After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I calmly told him there was no more cake left over and hung up. Good grief. 1114-10

IP Osgoode ? Potential Sabotage: Is that What'cha Want?

Michael ?Mike D? Diamond, Adam ?Ad-Rock? Horovitz and the estate of the recently deceased Adam ?MCA? Yauch (?the Beastie Boys?) have launched an action against Monster Energy Drink (hereafter ?Monster?) for the use of approximately 3 minutes of their music in a video promoting the ?Ruckus in the Rockies? event.

The video advertising the event, which is sponsored by Monster, featured the group?s name as well as samples from the songs ?Sabotage,? ?So Whatcha Want? and ?Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun?. The suit against Monster will ask the court not only for an injunction but also damages in the amount of $150,000 for each infringment.? Since Monster apparently did not get permission to use the band?s name or music, the legal basis for the suit appears to be straightforward.?

However, it was also discovered that the late Adam Yauch handwrote an addition to his will stating the following: ?In no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes?.? Apart from whether or not this addition to Mr. Yauch?s will is actually a valid addition, it creates a variety of complexities when it comes to copyright law.

The most obvious complexity is that Mr. Yauch can only restrict the use of copyrighted works for which he is the copyright owner.? If we take the current lawsuit as an example, Monster is accused of violating copyright in the music of the Beastie Boys.? Unfortunately, Yauch is only a joint author along with the other members of the Beastie Boys when it comes to the music used by Monster.? The issue then becomes how to separate Yauch?s section of the work from that of the other members of the group.? Fortunately, in the current case, this issue is about Monster using the band?s work without getting a license from any of the copyright holders.? Therefore, the living members of the Beastie Boys have a good reason to support the claim that the Yauch estate has for infringement of copyright.

However, what if the living members of the band decide to license their band?s music for use in advertising?? Normally the Yauch estate would benefit financially from the licensing agreement and there would be no reason for them to object.? As it stands now, with the addition to the will, the executor of the estate might be legally bound to try and prevent any advertising deal from being reached.? It is possible that the other band members will try to honour Mr. Yauch?s request in his will out of respect for him and avoid ever licensing use of their music in any advertising.? However, if they did license their music for advertising, and the matter actually went to trial, the executor of the Yauch estate might find that last written instruction to be?unenforceable in the American legal system.?

In Canada however, trying to enforce Mr. Yauch?s wishes might not be as hard as it is in America.? In Canada, authors have a separate moral right which comes from section 28.2(1) (b) of the Copyright Act, and is commonly known as the ?Right of Association?.? Essentially, an author, regardless of signing away economic rights in a work still retains the right to object to the work being ?used in association with a product, service, cause or institution? and can prevent the work from being associated with any product.? Therefore in Canada the Yauch estate might have an easier time arguing that no Beastie Boys song should ever be used in any advertising, because that was clearly the wish of Adam Yauch before he died.

Fortunately for the rest of the Beastie Boys, the current lawsuit is based upon a use to which they all object, and therefore the legal ramifications of Mr. Yauch?s will does not need to come into issue.? In the future however, the living Beastie Boy members might find Yauch?s will to be a minor hindrance when trying to license their music to advertisers.

Iraqi Sunni leader wounded at start of Eid

A Sunni religious leader who called on Iraqis to fight US troops but has more recently advocated national reconciliation was wounded by a car bomb as the Eid al-Fitr festival began in Baghdad on Sunday.

Mehdi al-Sumaidaie was travelling in west Baghdad after leading prayers on the first day of Eid, which marks the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, when the attack occurred.

"A car bomb targeted the convoy of Sheikh Sumaidaie after he left a mosque in Yarmuk," an interior ministry official said, referring to a neighbourhood in the capital's west.

The official, who declined to be identified, said Sumaidaie and four of his bodyguards were wounded in the blast.

The religious leader's cousin Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie, a Baghdad-based political analyst, confirmed his relative was wounded.

"Gunmen driving a car tried to cut off Sheikh al-Sumaidaie's convoy, and when the convoy came to a halt, another car driving fast crashed into his car and blew up," Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie told AFP.

"He was transferred to intensive care at Medical City hospital, where they performed surgery to remove shrapnel from his head."

Sumaidaie was formerly the head of a Salafist group that called for attacks against US troops, before their departure from Iraq at the end of last year, but he later fled to Syria.

He returned to Iraq last year, and has since called for national reconciliation.

The Eid al-Fitr festival began on Sunday for Iraq's Sunnis and some Shiites, but other Shiites, particularly followers of the country's most senior Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, will observe one more day of fasting before beginning Eid celebrations.

This Ramadan has been a particularly violent one in Iraq -- at least 411 people have been killed in attacks, according to an AFP tally based on reports from security and medical officials.

Garcia shoots 66, takes 1-stroke lead at Wyndham

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ? No lead is ever really safe at birdie-friendly Sedgefield Country Club. The last time Sergio Garcia played here, he learned that the hard way.

Garcia shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday to take the lead at 14-under 196 after three rounds at the Wyndham Championship.

It's a familiar spot for the Spaniard, who shared the third-round lead in 2009 but wound up finishing fourth after falling a stroke shy of a three-man playoff.

"Eighteen pars are not going to win it," Garcia said. "You have to make some birdies out there. ... I don't have a number. I'm not going to say I need to shoot 4 under, 5 under, or whatever. Someone might go out and shoot 9 under, and 5 under's not good enough."

Tim Clark and Bud Cauley were a stroke back, and Jason Dufner, Harris English and Carl Pettersson were at 12 under in the last event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Dufner shot a 63 ? the day's best round. Cauley had a 66, Clark shot a 67, and English and Pettersson had 68s.

Garcia ? whose second-round 63 marked his best PGA Tour round in a decade ? made a move with consecutive birdies midway through the back nine that briefly helped him leapfrog his playing partner, Clark.

Garcia plopped his tee shot 4 feet from the flagstick on the par-3 12th and tapped in, then followed that with a birdie on No. 13 to move to 14 under. Then, after just his second bogey of the tournament, he bounced back with a birdie on No. 15.

If he can keep it rolling for one more round, he might claim his first win on the tour since 2008 ? and strengthen his chances to make the European Ryder Cup team.

"Winning means a lot, no matter what," Garcia said.

Clark might have had the lead comfortably to himself, had he not missed short birdie putts on consecutive holes midway through the back nine.

Instead, he'll have to settle for a share of second place with Cauley, who had three straight late birdies.

"Today, the scoring was out there and obviously, the leaders didn't really get away from anyone," Clark said. "I felt like we all could have gone a little bit lower, but it's going to be the same tomorrow, really. A shootout. There's so many guys, probably, still in this tournament."

It's usually a birdiefest every August at this Donald Ross course, but for most players, it seems to be playing a little tougher this year. The cut of 1 under was the event's highest since it moved to Sedgefield in 2008.

The average winner's score in four years at this course has been 19 under, and it sure looks as if this year's champ ? whomever it is ? will approach that number.

Webb Simpson, a native North Carolinian and college star here who won the U.S. Open in June, won it at 18 under last year and came back to defend a title for the first time in his short career.

The only player with consecutive victories in this tournament has his name on the winner's trophy: Sam Snead, who did it twice ? in 1949-50 and 1955-56.

Simpson started one stroke back and a short while after his birdie on the par-5 No. 5 ? the easiest, and most frequently eagled, hole on the course this week ? was part of a six-man logjam that shared the lead at 12 under. Joining him were English, Clark, Garcia, Pettersson and second-round leader Jimmy Walker.

English was the first to backslide with a bogey on No. 11. Walker fell off the pace with a bogey on No. 10.

Simpson ran into big trouble late in his round with consecutive bogeys, sending his tee shot on No. 15 into some deep rough and then three-putting on No. 16, and his 71 dropped him four strokes back.

Dufner, who at No. 3 is the top player in the playoff standings in the Wyndham field, finished strong with birdies on three of his final four holes to sneak up the leaderboard.

"Kind of what I needed to get back in this tournament, post a low score and kind of be in the mix tomorrow," Dufner said.

Justin Leonard, who shot a 64, was one of the biggest movers. He started at 4 under and used a steady stream of birdies to make his climb. He needs a high finish to earn enough points to qualify for the playoffs, which begin next week at The Barclays.

"I know I need a top-three, top-four finish and ... I certainly gave myself a better chance," Leonard said.

Jeff Overton had the first hole-in-one of the week ? and his first on the tour ? on No. 12, using a 6-iron to ace the 196-yard hole. After finishing his round, he tweeted: "What a sweet shot. Too bad i didnt win a car."

New initiative urges Christians to shape modern art, entertainment

New initiative urges Christians to shape modern art, entertainment

A new organization is encouraging Christians to use their ?demographic size and collective buying power? to influence the movies, music and television produced by the entertainment industry, reports Catholic News Agency.

?The goal of As1 is to restore the Church back to its historically traditionally role as patron of the arts,? said Jonathan Bock, founder of As1, which launched last week.

Bock told CNA in an Aug. 14 interview that there is a need for the Christians to be ?in relationship? with the modern artistic community. Rather than painting and sculpture, the art of today entails the world of entertainment, primarily music, movies and television, he said.

There was a time when Christianity was ?in partnership with great artists,? working with them to create great masterpieces, Bock observed.

Today, however, ?we?ve virtually abandoned the arts,? he said, explaining that recent Christian generations have largely chosen to ?walk away from pop culture and create our own subculture? in order to promote positive values and avoid the secular world?s corrupting influence.

Although this shift was ?well-intentioned,? pop culture continued to thrive and needs to be engaged today, he said. Rather than denouncing artists as the enemy, we should be encouraging them to tell our story as Christians.

The current moment presents a huge opportunity for the necessary engagement, as several high profile Bible projects are currently being made, he added.

On Aug. 23, a new game show entitled ?The American Bible Challenge? will air on Game Show Network. Comedian and Christian Jeff Foxworthy will host the show, in which contestants competing for charity are tested on their knowledge of the Bible.

In addition, renowned producer Mark Burnett is creating a 10-hour series on the Bible to air on the History Channel next spring.

Reports have also indicated that Russell Crowe will be starring in an upcoming film about Noah and Steven Spielberg has considered directing a movie about Moses, although the details of these plot lines are not yet clear.

Bock said that the Christian community is presented with an opportunity to target and support these Bible projects, making them into hits so that the entertainment industry will be encouraged to make more.

He compared this to the Renaissance practice of patrons rewarding artists for making the art that they wanted with generous commissions.

The faithful cannot merely wait for culture to be created and then react to it, he said. Rather, they must return to the practice of building partnerships during the creating process.

Bock hopes that As1 will be one way for the Christian community to unite in order to build such partnerships.

Those who wish to join the movement can sign up on an email list at As1.org to receive alerts about Bible projects to support.

Bock also hopes that the initiative will create a ?vibrant online community.? In just the first week, As1 has attracted more than 6,000 Facebook fans, and the social media platform allows for ongoing debate, discussion and sharing of ideas among members.

Ultimately, Bock hopes the effort will lead Christians to have a greater interest in promoting and appreciating the arts, while guiding the makers of modern art to see the Christian community as an important audience.

?It?s making sure that we are a powerful, bankable audience that Hollywood desires,? he said.

Jessica Biel: I Have "No Idea" What Kind of Wedding I Want

Jessica Biel might have been thrilled that longtime boyfriend Justin Timberlake finally popped the question earlier this year, but she hasn't been busy planning her dream wedding in the nearly nine months since. In fact, the 30-year-old actress still doesn't have a very good picture of what their big day will look like.

Enough praises Intel for clean mineral efforts

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? Intel, Motorola Solutions, HP and Apple have become "pioneers of progress" through their efforts to avoid purchasing minerals that fund armed groups in Central Africa, according to a report released Thursday.

The Enough Project ranked companies based on the steps they have taken to make sure their mobile phones, iPads and other gadgets aren't paying for the weapons used to terrorize Congolese civilians.

Congo is home to about 70 percent of the world's supply of coltan, a mineral needed in mobile phones, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The vast country also has massive amounts of tin, gold, copper and cobalt.

While most of the companies had shown improvement since 2010, the Enough Project cited Nintendo in particular as trailing behind the rest of the industry when it comes to "conflict minerals."

Armed groups vying for control of these riches have used profits from illegal mining to purchase weapons used in gruesome attacks on civilians. In other cases, they have captured people and forced them to do the digging.

"The exploitation of Congo's mineral resources continues to exacerbate conflict and instability on the ground and consumers are still largely in the dark as to whether or not their products are conflict free," the report said.

"It will take a holistic effort by multiple governments and industries to regulate the flow of illegal conflict minerals. The driver of that effort must remain the demand of the conscious consumer."

Thursday's report comes just days before a key development is expected on the issue. U.S. legislation passed in July 2010 required American companies using tungsten, tin, tantalum and gold to reveal their supply chains in an effort to avoid using conflict minerals.

However, the law has not been fully implemented yet because the rules on how the law should be applied haven't yet been drafted by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC is due to vote on those final regulations Aug. 22.

Even though that law is not yet in effect, the Enough Project said its existence already had helped propel many companies to take action.

The Washington-based group praised Intel for its pledge to produce a conflict-free microprocessing chip by 2013, becoming the first company to publicly commit to such a deadline.

It also singled out HP as "the most active corporate participant in a diplomacy work group on Congo."

And the Enough Project also gave high points to Philips, ACER, Dell and Microsoft, but described other companies as "laggards."

"Despite growing public awareness about this issue and significant industry movement, Nintendo has made no known effort to trace or audit its supply chain," the report said. "Sharp, HTC, Nikon, and Canon are taking initial steps to join industry efforts, but their progress remains far behind industry leaders."

There was no immediate comment from the companies on the report, which was released before their offices opened on the U.S. West Coast.

The group said that it wanted the companies to know more about the origins of the minerals they were buying, but not to avoid buying from the country altogether.

"A handful of companies are helping Congo develop a clean trade, but some companies are taking a hands-off approach to instruct their suppliers to not buy minerals from Congo and the region. This approach helps cut off armed groups but leaves mining communities in Congo behind."

Michael Jackson's father drops lawsuit against Conrad Murray

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Michael Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray has one less thing to worry about.

Joe Jackson, the father of the deceased pop singer Michael Jackson, has dropped his wrongful death lawsuit against Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the musician's death.

In a court document filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday and obtained by TheWrap, Jackson asks that the suit be dismissed without prejudice.

The elder Jackson brought the suit in June 2010, a year after his son's death at the age of 50, asking for unspecified damages and a jury trial.

It is unclear why Jackson decided to drop the suit; his attorney has not yet replied to TheWrap's request for comment. However, the phrase "you can't get blood from a stone" comes to mind - Murray is currently in jail, serving his sentence for involuntary manslaughter.

Murray was found guilty of causing Jackson's death last year. The singer died of acute propofol intoxication. Murray admitted to administering the anesthetic to Jackson on an almost daily basis in the weeks leading up to his death, and was found to have been negligent in treating Jackson, deviating from the standard of care on multiple fronts.

Taliban attack Pakistan air base, 10 dead

Heavily armed militants stormed a Pakistani air force base on Thursday, sparking clashes that left 10 people dead and raised concerns about the safety of the country's nuclear arsenal.

One security official was killed and a plane damaged in the pre-dawn assault at PAF Base Minhas claimed by the Taliban as militants again showed their ability to penetrate a sensitive military site five years into an insurgency.

The first strike on a base in more than a year came amid speculation that Pakistan could bow to US demands for an operation against militants in their main fortress of North Waziristan, in the tribal belt on the Afghan border.

An official denied there were nuclear weapons on the heavily guarded base, but the audacious assault raised further questions in the West about the dangers of Pakistan's atomic weapons falling into extremists' hands.

The Pakistan Air Force said nine attackers dressed in military uniforms and armed with rocket propelled-grenades and suicide vests targeted the base and adjacent Pakistan Aeronautical Complex at 2:00 am (2100 GMT Wednesday).

The complex assembles Mirage and, with Chinese help, JF-17 fighter jets.

PAF Minhas, in the town of Kamra in Punjab province 60 kilometres (35 miles) northwest of Islamabad, has been attacked twice before.

"Eight miscreants were killed inside the Minhas base boundary wall and one miscreant exploded himself outside the perimeters where he was hiding," the air force announced.

It said there had been a shootout "for more than two hours" and 10 hours after the assault began, spokesman Tariq Mahmood confirmed the base was "totally safe".

The Pakistani Taliban said planes at the base were being used to kill its fighters.

Spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan dedicated the attack to late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and claimed four Taliban fighters were killed after destroying three aircraft and killed a dozen soldiers.

Witnesses said the attackers came round the back, exploiting the holiest night of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan to remain undetected as long as possible.

"Most of the male residents (from the village at the back) were in mosques for special prayers," local resident Athar Abbas told Express Television.

"I heard three or four explosions, there was heavy gunfire also," he said. "It appears that the militants arrived using a village track and climbed over the wall."

One officer told AFP that he saw flames after waking up for his late night meal, eaten during the dawn-to-dusk Muslim fasting month.

"There was an announcement by megaphone for soldiers not to move from the barracks and we were forbidden from going to the area where I saw the fire," he said. Special forces and police were scrambled to the scene.

Air force spokesman Mahmood said one security official had been killed, and the base commander wounded in the shoulder. Previous Taliban assaults on Pakistani military bases have exacted far higher casualty tolls.

In May 2011, it took 17 hours to quell an attack on an air base in Karachi claimed by the Taliban, piling embarrassment on the armed forces just three weeks after US troops killed bin Laden in Pakistan.

Pakistan has been on alert for independence day on Tuesday and the Muslim festival of Eid, which is expected to begin at the weekend.

On Tuesday, the head of the army, General Ashfaq Kayani, used his independence day address to describe the war on terror as "our own war and a just war" -- not the American conflict as often portrayed.

He said "no state can afford a parallel system of governance and militias", and called on the nation to stand united or face the risk of a "civil war situation".

Pakistan says 35,000 of its people, including more than 3,000 soldiers, have been killed as a result of terrorism since the 9/11 attacks and the 2001 US-led invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan.

Foreign ministry spokesman Moazzam Ahmad Khan was Thursday forced to deny any danger of Pakistan's nuclear warheads falling into the wrong hands.

"We have a robust command and control, so nobody should really worry about the security and safety of our assets," he told reporters.

The base in Kamra was most recently targeted on October 23, 2009 when a suicide bomber killed eight people at a checkpoint.

Tea party's Yoho on verge of upset in Fla.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? While two veteran Republicans, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson and Rep. John Mica of Florida, survived conservative challenges in Tuesday's primaries, a veterinarian and political novice named Ted Yoho stole much of the spotlight.

Tea party challenger Yoho was on the verge of a major upset against 12-term GOP Rep. Cliff Stearns as four states held primaries, including Connecticut and Minnesota. Yoho was ahead of Stearns by less than 900 votes, complete but unofficial primary results showed.

Yoho's anti-incumbent campaign was boosted by a television ad with actors dressed as politicians in suits eating from a trough alongside pigs and throwing mud at each other.

Stearns, who is chairman of an investigations subcommittee for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has led high-profile probes of Planned Parenthood and the failed California solar energy company Solyndra.

In Wisconsin, Thompson turned back a trio of challengers to win the Republican Senate primary, setting up a general election race against Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin for retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl's seat, which the GOP hasn't held since 1957.

Thompson's win, as an establishment Republican derided by rivals as not conservative enough, was a disappointment for tea party forces and other conservative activists hoping to add to big wins earlier this year in the Indiana and Texas GOP Senate primaries. Tea party candidates scored major gains in the 2010 congressional races, but they've had mixed success since then.

The win marked the first step in a political comeback for Thompson, 70, a former Cabinet secretary who hasn't been on the ballot since 1998.

He beat former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann; businessman and political newcomer Eric Hovde, who spent at least $4 million on the race; and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald. Neumann had support from tea party forces as well as the anti-tax group Club for Growth.

Thompson's challengers cast themselves as closer to today's more conservative GOP than him.

Wisconsin Republicans hope they can build momentum from GOP Gov. Scott Walker's recall win in June and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's decision to tap native son Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.

The GOP sees the Senate race in Wisconsin as a pickup opportunity as they try to gain majority control from the Democrats.

Thompson, a governor for 14 years who was first elected in 1966, enjoyed the most name recognition statewide.

He got a late boost from Ryan, who praised Thompson's record as governor during a rally in Wisconsin on Sunday. Ryan did not mention Thompson's rivals. Thompson aired a radio ad on Monday featuring Ryan's comments.

In Florida, Mica, a 10-term congressman who wields considerable clout as the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is expected to win in November in his Republican-leaning district. Tea party freshman Rep. Sandy Adams fell short against Mica despite backing from 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Mica and Adams landed in the same central Florida district due to redistricting, and the result was a nasty member-versus-member primary.

The Florida contest was a prime example of the sharp split in the Republican party this election season between grass-roots conservatives and the GOP's establishment candidates.

Mica overcame criticism by Adams that the big-spending ways of longtime lawmakers and Washington insiders like him have fueled the nation's soaring debt, a charge that echoes the deep divisions in the GOP. The two tangled over spending for pet projects and who's more conservative.

Also in Florida, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson will face Republican Connie Mack IV in November after each handily won his party primary.

In Connecticut, wealthy former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, the GOP's endorsed candidate, defeated former Rep. Christopher Shays in the Senate primary. Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent, is retiring.

Shays, a moderate who had represented a district anchored by Greenwich and other wealthy suburbs outside New York City since 1987, lost his seat in 2008. He had hoped his Washington experience could blunt McMahon's wealth and official party support.

McMahon spent about $50 million of her own money in her failed 2010 Senate race. It was the largest amount of money spent on any campaign in state history, as well as the largest amount per vote nationwide. She outspent Shays and attacked him as a career politician.

In Connecticut's Democratic Senate primary, Rep. Chris Murphy, who was the party's endorsed candidate, beat former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz. Looking past Shays, McMahon has already aired an attack ad against Murphy.

(AP) ? Michael and Magic versus Kobe and LeBron?

Sounds like a dream matchup, and it could be coming to a video game console near you.

With USA Basketball and 2K Sports forming a partnership, fans can see what happens when the amazing 1992 Dream Team goes up against this year's Olympic gold medal winner once NBA 2K13 hits the shelves this fall.

Never mind that it's not quite the real thing, more fuel is about to be added to the debate. Not that there really is a debate in Michael Jordan's mind.

"We'll never know, but let's talk about it," Jordan said on a conference call. "I know Kobe (Bryant) said some things early on and I responded to those. The '92 Dream Team, I felt, was a more well-rounded basketball team."

It's hard to argue, considering the 1992 Dream Team had Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird leading a group that is widely considered the greatest collection of talent ever assembled. That team included 11 future Hall of Famers, won its six Olympic games by an average of more than 43 points en route to the gold medal and never was challenged the way this year's team was by Spain in the gold medal game, with the Americans squeezing out a 107-100 victory.

Then again, that's a testament to the global growth of the sport that the 1992 team spurred, leading to an influx of foreign talent in the NBA.

The '92 team boasted arguably the greatest player of all time in Jordan and greatest point guard in Magic Johnson, not to mention Larry Bird and dominant centers in Patrick Ewing and David Robinson. If the most recent group had a weakness, it was in the middle, with Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh and Blake Griffin sitting out with injuries. Throw in the fact that Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose missed the games, too, and the Americans weren't quite fully loaded.

Still, they brought plenty of ammunition to London, with LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Bryant leading the way. And even with some stars missing, there still was talk that this year's team could be as good as the one that stormed through Barcelona two decades earlier. Bryant fueled the debate when he told reporters during training in Las Vegas they could take a game from the 1992 team if they met in their primes.

Even though Bryant didn't say the current stars would win a series, the comment drew sharp replies from members of the 1992 team. Jordan told The Associated Press back then that he "absolutely laughed" and said there's "no comparison" which team is better.

This time, he wasn't quite as blunt.

"I just felt like we had enough size that we could contend with the 2012 team," Jordan said. "I think one of the things the 2012 team lacked was size. We probably would have attacked them from inside and outside, and our defense would have been pretty much solidified with the shot-blockers as well as perimeter defensive players.

"I think those guys were much more athletic than maybe we were at that particular point, but I would like to think we were a little bit smarter and well-groomed about playing at that level of basketball. Honestly, I don't think we would have had problems with them as much as they probably would have had (with us). I think our team would have been a lot better in terms of all-around basketball."

There's no way to know for sure, of course. There's no time machine that can transport the 1992 team to today or the 2012 team back 20 years, so the video game might be the next best thing. If nothing else, it'll give the debate another platform once the game is released on Oct. 2.

The idea of seeing Jordan going against Kobe or James should intrigue fans, even if they're the ones at the controls and the players are in graphic form. Right?

The numbers indicate they would. Jason Argent, 2K Sports' vice president of marketing, said he didn't have the online statistics but the company sold about 5.5 million units of the 2K11 game, and another 4 million units for the 2K12 game, which was impacted by last season's NBA lockout lockout.

Even so, the company wasn't planning to include the 1992 and 2012 U.S. teams.

He said Jay-Z provided the push.

The rapper and part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets is serving as the game's executive producer, and he insisted in a meeting that those Olympic teams be included. He also helped get Charles Barkley to sign on and be included.

"He put in a call to Charles, himself, and helped us work an agreement to use him in the game," Argent said.

One player who won't be represented in the game is Scottie Pippen. Argent said they simply couldn't reach an agreement.

As for which team was better ? 1992 or 2012? Jordan thinks it's just beginning.

"The only way it can end is to lace them back up and play against them in 2012, but I don't think that's going to happen," Jordan said, laughing. "Just let the debate begin."
