'Dirty Jobs': Mike Rowe Thinks He's Seen A Dead Body (VIDEO)

Mike Rowe is always cracking jokes, pulling pranks and generally having a lot of fun as he tackles various different "Dirty Jobs" (Tue., 9 p.m. EST on Discovery). On this week's installment, he got on board with the team at Medical Waste Transport, Inc. So the guys got together to turn things around on Rowe as he was learning the tricks of their trade.

"You said something about inspecting it though, before it comes in?" Rowe asked, regarding a collection of red barrels. But when he opened one, he got quite a startle. After he jumped away with a yelp, he realized they'd only stuffed a mannequin inside the barrel. He was certainly able to appreciate a good joke, going on and on about how well they'd gotten him.

Then, he shifted into typical bad-jokes-and-puns Mike Rowe. "We lost another executive producer," he quipped. When one of the guys held out the arm they'd put in there with the head, Rowe added, "You really went out on a limb with this thing. No, I gotta hand it to you."

Find out where Mike ends up next as "Dirty Jobs" continues every Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on Discovery.

5 countries with the longest ongoing US sanctions

The gradual implementation of sanctions on Myanmar (Burma) began in 1988 under President Ronald Regan, who suspended all aid to the country. It wasn?t until May 1997 that President Bill Clinton issued?comprehensive sanctions???which included additional restrictions ending all non-humanitarian assistance, banning entry visas for Myanmar government officials, and instituting a moratorium on new investments in Myanmar by US citizens ??after determining that Burma was repressing democracy on a large scale.

In 1988 a group of generals deposed Myanmar?s Ne Win (who had ruled since a military coup in 1962), suspended the constitution, and established a ruling military junta. The junta suppressed public demonstration and an estimated 3,000 people were killed and thousands fled into border areas or left the country in the immediate aftermath.

By 1997 when the sanctions were implemented, the junta had spent a decade tightening its grip on public dissent. The junta placed politician Aung San Suu Kyi, who went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize, under house arrest soon after coming to power, and annulled 1990 elections won by her National League for Democracy.

After years of isolation, the regime embarked on an aggressive reform agenda starting in 2011. One democratic opening: The junta allowed the National League for Democracy to legally register.

The US and Myanmar re-initiated diplomatic relations on Jan. 13 after the regime released hundreds of political prisoners and signed a cease-fire agreement with the Karen rebel group, reports the Monitor. Despite the warming relations, US sanctions have not been lifted.

Sony, Paramount and Weinstein Co. get Oscar boost (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Movie studio Sony Pictures Entertainment received 21 Oscar nominations on Tuesday, fending off stiff competition from rival companies Paramount Pictures and The Weinstein Co. for Academy Award nods, which can boost box office and DVD sales.

Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp and parent for Sony Pictures Classics, Sony Pictures Releasing and Columbia Pictures, picked up six nominations for "Moneyball" and five for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" among its nods.

"What was wonderful about this year is that we got to make a bunch of movies that are not usually the kind of movies that are a studios' bread and butter, and all of them paid off this year and that's really gratifying," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, citing "Dragon Tattoo" and "Moneyball" as "not normal studio movies."

Oscars nominations typically help boost revenues of movies that are still playing at box offices because awards publicity heightens awareness by casual moviegoers.

The studios supplement their marketing by leveraging the prestige that comes with a nod for the world's top film honors, and Oscars help boost sales of DVDs and licensing fees for future television airings.

While Sony Pictures led with 21 nominations, Paramount's "Hugo" scored the most nods of any single film with 11.

The film, which has a reported production budget estimated at $150 million, has amassed only $55 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices since its release in November 2011, and $27.3 million in overseas ticket sales.

But producer Graham King noted "Hugo" is still in theaters, has not played in many international markets, and the acclaim from Oscar nods should lead to its long life in libraries.

"The 11 nominations will help the international (box office). I'm hoping the nominations help people discover the film, and I hope it will have a long shelf life, and in 15 or 20 years people will still be talking about it," King told Reuters.

The only film in the best picture race this year to have crossed the $100 million milestone in the North America domestic box office sales, so far, is "The Help," which has grossed $169 million since its release in August 2011.

THUMBS UP FOR WEINSTEIN

While Sony and Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc., made out well among major studios, it may be privately-held The Weinstein Co. that sees the biggest boost from nominations.

Run by Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob, who led Miramax Films until 2005, Weinstein Co had 16 nominations including 10 for "The Artist" -- second to "Hugo."

Last year, the company received 12 nominations for "The King's Speech" and timed its release to leverage the publicity of nominations. It went on to win best picture and grossed $138 million at domestic box offices.

The Weinsteins have adopted a similar strategy for "The Artist" and "The Iron Lady," which earned Meryl Streep a nod for best actress in her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Both movies rolled out in limited release across New York and Los Angeles late last year to qualify for Oscars, before their wider release from January through March.

Similarly, Sony Pictures has taken "Moneyball," which grossed $75 million at domestic box offices since its initial release in September 2011, and re-issued the film in a limited number of theaters.

Also on Tuesday, Paramount Pictures said it will re-release this week the movie "Rango," which earned a nomination for best animated film on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group received 13 nominations, led by Steven Spielberg's epic World War I tale, "War Horse" with six nods, while News Corp's Fox film divisions received 10 nominations, led by family drama "The Descendants" with five nods. Both "War Horse" and "Descendants" are still playing in theaters.

Seal, Heidi Klum announce separation (AP)

NEW YORK ? Seal and Heidi Klum have announced that their storybook marriage is coming to the end of the runway.

In a statement Sunday night, the power couple announced their separation after rumors swirled over the weekend that a divorce was imminent.

"While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul searching we have decided to separate," the joint statement read. "We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children's sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy."

The couple married in 2005 and has four children together, including the supermodel's daughter from a previous relationship.

They were one of Hollywood's most high-profile couples, and seemed to have the relationship everyone should envy. They two starred together in the music video "Secret," they renewed their wedding vows each anniversary, boasted of their love in the media, and threw Halloween bashes together where they dressed in outrageous outfits, most recently last year in New York City, where the two engaged in their typical public display of affection for the cameras.

In an interview with The Associated Press in 2007, the "Kiss from A Rose" singer described his wife, who has a tattoo of his name on her arm, as his best friend.

"It is really important that we have that understanding because apart from anything else it is really healthy," he said of the "Project Runway" host. "People often talk about the most important thing in a relationship. They say it is really important that you are turned on by your partner and you love each other, which is all really true.I often think that the most important thing or certainly up there with love is respect."

TMZ first reported on Saturday that the two planned to divorce this week.

His announcement comes as he releases his new album, "Soul 2," on Tuesday, which has songs like "Love T.K.O," "Let's Stay Together" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore."

Key lawmaker withdraws support for Aussie gov't (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Prime Minister Julia Gillard's tenuous grip on power weakened on Saturday when a key independent lawmaker withdrew his support for her minority government.

Lawmaker Andrew Wilkie announced he had ended his 17-month-old agreement with the center-left Labor Party government after Gillard broke a promise to him to introduce legislation that would create new controls on slot machines.

His defection leaves Gillard with control of 75 of the 150 seats in House of Representatives, the lower chamber where parties form governments. This means Gillard could lose power if Labor loses a single by-election and the opposition unites lawmakers outside her coalition.

"I regard the prime minister to be in breach of the written agreement she signed, leaving me no option but to honor my word and end my current relationship with her government," Wilkie told reporters.

"I'm very let down by the prime minister ... and I think a lot of Australians are feeling very let down by the prime minister," he added.

Wilkie wants legislation that would force gamblers to set a limit on how much they are prepared to lose before they start playing slot machines. The aim is to reduce the losses of gambling addicts.

Gillard announced Saturday that she does not plan to introduce the new slot machine technology until 2016 ? two years later than she had promised Wilkie.

Gillard announced a compromise plan on Saturday in which limited trials of so-called pre-commitment technology would begin next year. In addition, automatic teller machines in slot machine venues would be limited to maximum withdrawals of $250.

Gillard said Wilkie's plan would not have been endorsed by Parliament.

"We need people working together on the same page to get change, and the package of reforms we're announcing today I believe will get that support in the Parliament," Gillard told reporters.

With polls pointing to the conservative opposition winning elections due next year, there are serious doubts about whether the changes will ever take place.

Slot machine operators mounted a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign against the reforms, which they claim would cost sporting and social clubs billions of dollars in lost revenue.

Gillard managed to form a government after elections in 2010 when three independent lawmakers and a legislator from the minor Greens party agreed to support the 72 Labor lawmakers in the House of Representatives, creating a majority of 76.

Wilkie's bargaining power diminished in November last year when an opposition lawmaker agreed to become House of Representatives speaker, replacing a Labor lawmaker. Because speakers can vote only to break a tie, the change effectively gave Gillard an additional vote on most legislation and a two-seat buffer.

Afghan Taliban say recruited soldier who killed French troops (Reuters)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) ? The Afghan Taliban said on Saturday they had recruited an Afghan soldier who shot dead four French soldiers in the country's east a day earlier, prompting France to threaten an early pullout from the NATO-led war.

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has recruited people in important positions. Some of them have already accomplished their missions," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters by telephone, using another name the Islamist group call themselves.

A regional Taliban commander added that incidents such as a video showing U.S. marines urinating on corpses was boosting support for the group among Afghans and threatened more attacks.

Cults Wrap U.S. Tour With Sold-Out Show

Concert's stunning visuals help create a piece of modern art.

NEW YORKCults ended the brief final leg of their U.S. tour on Thursday night, drawing in a sold-out crowd at New York City's Webster Hall.

The band, led by singer Madeline Follin and guitarist Brian Oblivion, jammed their way through a solid set that brought the crowd from mesmerized silence during the softer, almost trance-driven songs to screaming cheers for Madeline's impressive high notes scattered throughout the fast-paced pop songs.

The matching long-haired duo, who remain the only act on British superstar Lily Allen's record label, In The Name Of, are already known for their edgy music videos. "Abducted" and "Go Outside" have both been lauded by critics, and fans eagerly await their upcoming video for "You Know What I Mean." All three were performed true to the album versions during the 70-minute set.

As the band translated their beautifully pop-heavy and catchy music to a live venue, videos blasted on a multiplex-sized screen behind them throughout the show. Synchronized swimmers, owls, footage from Jonestown and frightening monkey-faced men emerged from a TV static as Madeline's live image juxtaposed throughout the entire set. The show felt more like a piece of modern art than a concert, in that the band not only put on a solid set of infectious music, but were also accompanied by a series of stunning visuals paced to their beat, transforming Webster Hall into a modern art gallery. They even threw in an inspired and seldom-played cover of Leonard Cohen's 1988 classic "Everybody Knows," as well as an encore for the remix of "Bad Things," accompanied by up-and-coming hip-hop star Freddie Gibbs.

Cults head to Australia and Asia in February.

Endangered turtle to be tracked in Cambodia (AP)

BANGKOK ? One of the world's most endangered turtles has been released into a Cambodian river with a satellite transmitter attached to its shell to track how it will navigate through commercial fishing grounds and other man-made hazards.

The 75-pound (34-kilogram) southern river terrapin ? one of only about 200 adults remaining in the wild ? waddled into the Sre Ambel river in southwestern Cambodia this past week to the cheers of local residents and conservationists.

The New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society said the female terrapin was given to the group last year instead of being sold to traffickers who have decimated the country's population of turtles and other species to cater to demand for exotic wildlife in China.

The southern river terrapin, once considered the sole property of Cambodia's kings, only survives in the wilds of Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia, the group said in a statement. The population in the Sre Ambel river is estimated at less than 10 nesting females.

But it said the terrapins there have an excellent chance of recovery because coastal mangrove forests in the region are among the largest and most pristine in Southeast Asia, spanning some 175 square miles (45,000 hectares).

The first-ever satellite monitoring of the species hopes to determine how the turtle will fare among fisherman as well as in areas threatened by sand mining and conversion of mangrove forests into shrimp farms.

A small population of the species was found in 2000 in Sre Ambel after being considered locally extinct for many years.

Following the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1970s which left the country devastated, poor rural dwellers scoured the forests for wildlife, much of which was sold to traders connected to China, where many wild animals ? from turtles to tigers ? are believed to possess medicinal and sex-enhancing properties.

The turtle project is being run by the Wildlife Conservation Society in cooperation with the Cambodian government and Wildlife Reserves Singapore, a zoological enterprise.

Remembering Etta James, "The Matriarch of the Blues" (The Week)

New York ? The legendary soul singer, best known for her searing take on "At Last," died Friday from complications of leukemia at the age of 73

On Friday, "Matriarch of the Blues" Etta James died from complications of leukemia. The 73-year-old singer may best be remembered for her passionate rendition of the torch song "At Last," but her career spanned over 60 years. A foster home runaway, James scored her first hit, "Dance With Me Henry," at age 15, and released her last album, The Dreamers, in 2011. Though praised as a "force of nature" with a "powerhouse" voice, the six-time Grammy winner had a troubled life, weathering numerous drug addictions, hepatitis C, obesity (and then gastric bypass surgery), dementia, and leukemia. Here's how the press and other singers who felt her influence are remembering James:?

1. She had an unshakable voice
James "had grit in her voice that could melt like sugar or rub like salt in a wound," says Neda Ulaby at NPR. What was remarkable about it was its range, says Peter Keepnews at The New York Times. Her vocals could "enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the subtlest love songs." A survey of her career attests to that versatility: The bouncy soulfulness of "Dance With Me Henry," the "funky and high-spirited" "Tell Mama" in 1967, and her aching torch songs, "At Last" and "I'd Rather Go Blind." She's the rare artist to be inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame, and even performed as the Rolling Stones' opening act in the '70s and '80s. Watch any James clip on YouTube, "and dare tell me the world hasn't lost one of its most heart-stopping performers," says James Reed at The Boston Globe.

?

2. There was "darkness beneath the joy"
"It was often said of Etta James that you could hear her whole life in her voice," says Ulaby. And it was a tortured life, too. During a career high from 1960-63, she had 10 records on the R&B charts. But after a slump n the mid-1960s, James fell prey to a drug habit, resorting to bouncing checks, forging prescriptions, and stealing from friends in order to feed her addiction. After a stint in rehab, she emerged a darker, more soulful singer, channeling all of that life experience into her music. She often spoke candidly about her drug addiction, and the affect it had on her career. "A lot of people think the blues is depressing," she told The Los Angeles Times in 1992, "but that's not the blues I?m singing. When I'm singing blues, I'm singing life. People that can't stand to listen to the blues, they've got to be phonies."

3. She reinvented "At Last," and made it a classic
James is best known for her take on the standard "At Last," which was originally written in 1941 and recorded by Glen Miller's orchestra, but was made indelible by James in 1961. She crooned the song "with a measured contralto," says Dave Hoekstra at The Chicago Sun-Times, surrendering to "the dynamics of an entire relationship: The wanting, the discovery, and renewal."? Thanks to James' "shimmering, torchy" vocals, says Ben Greenman at The New Yorker, the song has become ubiquitous. Beyond popping up in films and commercials, "At Last" is now the consummate wedding song, says Mandi Bierly at Entertainment Weekly. "The lyrics are so simple, her voice and string section so triumphant ? no song captures the jubilation of knowing you've found love better." When Beyonce Knowles played the singer in the 2008 film Cadillac Records, she recorded James' version of the song, reprising it for Barack and Michelle Obama on the night of his inauguration.

SEE ALSO: Has Bruce Springsteen delivered another 'rousing political anthem'?

?

4. She influenced generations of singers
James' reach was vast, says Reed, influencing the sound of female singers ranging from Dusty Springfield to Bonnie Raitt. Flip on the radio today, and you can hear James' trademark, wrenching soulfulness in the voices of Adele, Christina Aguilera, and Beyonce. "Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself," Beyonce said after filming Cadillac Records, "and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist." After learning of James' death Friday, the "Single Ladies" singer posted on her website: "Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time? Her musical contributions will last a lifetime."

Microsoft 2Q beats Street despite soft PC market (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Microsoft Corp. battled through a weak PC market to post flat earnings in the final quarter of 2011, boosting sales of servers, Xbox games and its Office productivity software while trimming losses at its Bing search engine.

The quarter wasn't as bad as some industry analysts feared, given that flooding in Thailand constricted the supply of hard disk drives used in personal computers. Microsoft also witnessed a wave of consumers buying Apple Inc.'s popular iPad, which cut into sales of miniature laptop PCs known as netbooks.

Still, Microsoft's earnings modestly topped expectations. That was largely thanks to strong business demand for software and services, and an upbeat holiday season for the Xbox game console and the accompanying Kinect motion controller.

Its shares rose 70 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $28.82 in after-hours trading Thursday.

Net income in the company's second quarter through December came to $6.62 billion, down slightly from the $6.63 billion a year ago. Earnings per share came to 78 cents, up a penny from a year ago, as the outstanding share count fell.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $20.89 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting slightly weaker earnings of 76 cents per share. Sales were below the $20.92 billion expected.

"People were afraid it was going to be much, much worse," said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC.

Gillis said cost controls and a second-consecutive quarter of reduced losses at Bing helped results. Continuing growth in its Office software division was also encouraging, he said.

The company said PC sales were down an estimated 2 percent to 4 percent from a year earlier. Netbook sales made up just 2 percent of the overall PC market, down from 8 percent a year ago as the iPad decimated the lightweight portable computer category.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., is now looking ahead to the release of Windows 8, an operating system that should work similarly over PCs and tablet computers.

It is also pinning hopes on a new category of PCs called Ultrabooks, which mimic Apple's MacBook Air in form, but which may also utilize a touch screen that would work on the upcoming Windows. A beta version of Windows 8 is due out late next month.

"We're on track, we feel really good about where we are on the product, and the next super important milestone is the beta release," said Bill Koefoed, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations.

Although analysts expect another weak quarter for PCs, sales are seen strengthening as the year goes on.

The big question is whether Microsoft can deliver results on a whole range of new products from its Windows Phone smartphone operating system to Windows 8 and its Office 365 suite of cloud-based productivity applications.

"It's a year of the product cycle" for Microsoft, said Josh Olson, a technology analyst for Edward Jones. "How well they bring those product offerings to market will say a lot about the Microsoft story this year."

Updated: January 18, 2012 2:01AM

SCHERERVILLE ? Friends, loved ones and members of the community at large gathered Tuesday to say goodbye to Sgt. Brian Leonhardt of Merrillville.

An American flag covered his casket as pictures capturing the important moments of his 21 years flashed on video screens in the background.

Mourners waited for up to an hour during peak visiting times at Memory Lane Memorial Park and Funeral Chapel for a chance to pay their respects to Leonhardt?s family and young widow, Dianne.

?I can?t believe the response,? Dianne Leonhardt said. Earlier this week she attended services for Spc. Robert Tauteris Jr. of Hamlet, who along with her husband and two other soldiers, was killed Jan. 6 by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. She said that service, too, drew a large outpouring of support, so she expected the same for her husband, but was still surprised by just how many people came out.

Spc. Christopher Patterson, 20, of Aurora, Ill., a music student at Valparaiso University, and Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger, 32, of Indianapolis were also killed in the blast. The four men were members of the Indiana National Guard 713th Engineer Company based in Valparaiso.

Chuck and Patricia Marsh of Crown Point were among those who came to show their support. The couple do not know the family personally, but their son, Pvt. Ryan Marsh, serves in the 713th Engineer Company and was on base when the patrol was hit. Marsh said as parents the loss of a member of their son?s unit is difficult.

?We came to pay our respects for a fellow soldier,? Marsh said.

?This is a strong patriotic family,? Patricia Marsh said.

Leonhardt comes from a family of eight. Three of his older brothers, Chuck, Randall and A.J., also served in the Indiana National Guard. Randall was also a Marine. He also two other brothers, Robert III, Randall?s twin, and Trevor, the youngest of the group. His sisters are Theresa Stoneback and Jackie Leonhardt. His mother is Marie Leonhardt of Merrillville and his father is Robert Leonhardt Jr. of Lakes of the Four Seasons.

Marianne Wyatt of Highland and her daughter, Arielle Popovich, 14, also of Highland, said it was Leonhardt?s sense of humor and his laughter they will miss the most. Wyatt?s oldest daughter Laura and Leonhardt were classmates and friends.

?He had the best sense of humor,? Arielle said.

Wyatt said they will cherish their memories and the many funny stories they can share but will never understand the senselessness of the loss of the life of someone who was as good a person as Leonhardt.

?You?re always told life is not fair. It really isn?t. They had to take Brian out of this earth and it?s really not fair,? Wyatt said.

A funeral is planned at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Hammond, 507 State St.

Why Can't Mitt Romney Be Pro-Life About Corporations? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," is perpetrating a parody of a run for the GOP nomination. He's doing it to shed light on the dark side of campaign finance, according to an ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos. The New York Times reports Colbert's Super PAC is running an attack ad. The ad accidentally raises an interesting point about stem cell research and abortion issues.

The ad, which appears on ColbertNation.com, includes clips of Mitt Romney proclaiming "corporations are people." Based on this premise the ad claims Romney, who has dismantled corporations, is a murderer and nicknames him, "Mitt the Ripper." It's hilarious, particularly in the slow-motion segments.

Stem cell research opponents make the argument it is wrong to harvest stem cells since those cells could eventually become a person. This is also the same argument used by anti-abortion activists. I'm no lawyer, but my understanding is that corporations actually are considered people under the law. Why isn't the destruction of a corporation seen as murder if corporations are legally people?

If a blastocyst, the clump of 150 or so cells harvested for stem cell research, according to the National Institute of Health, is valuable as a potential person then why aren't corporations equally valuable if they are, legally, people?

Pro-life advocates fight to ban stem cell research forever and overturn Roe v. Wade as part of an agenda aimed at protecting potential people. If their arguments are legally valid shouldn't the same logic lead to laws banning the destruction of "actual" people in the form of corporations?

The reason corporations are not seen as victims of murder is that we know they're not really people. Mitt Romney should stop advocating for them to be considered as such and the laws of the United States should stop considering business entities as legally equal to human beings.

On the flip side of the coin, if the United States insists on treating corporations as actual people but does not consider them worthy of protection from "murder" what logic can be applied to give greater protection to cell clumps that are only potential people?

Colbert may have set out to lampoon politics but his humor gave us insight to the logical conflict between the idea of corporate personhood and pro-life dogma.

Women held in Mexico-to-Ireland adoption racket

Mexican investigators have detained seven women and seized 10 children in connection with an apparent child-trafficking ring that aimed to supply babies to Irish couples.

On Monday, three women were detained at a ranch in a suburb of Guadalajara who were taking care of a nine-month old boy, a Jalisco state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Last week, authorities detained four women and seized nine children, all of them between two months and two years of age.

The women told authorities they had been hired as nannies to take care of children in the process of being adopted, prosecutors said.

Police have raided several ranches to look for more evidence in the case, investigators said.

Buy or rent
Prosecutors first opened the investigation last week following the arrest of a 21-year-old woman who was accused by her sister-in-law of trying to sell one of her children and of "renting" the other one.

The woman led authorities to three other women, all in their early 30s, who took part in the "renting" of the babies, and seized nine children, including the 21-year-old woman's two kids. Another seven were seized from Irish couples.

One killed every half hour in Mexico drug violence

The first woman arrested claimed she had signed a contract with a law firm to allow her child to be photographed in different places in Jalisco state for advertising purposes.

She told investigators that her baby was taken for 15 days and that she received $500 pesos ($36 dollars) per day as payment, prosecutors said.

The other three women reportedly took the child and several others to a hotel in Guadalajara where they met with the Irish couples who believed they were going to adopt them.

The couples then took the children to the nearby town of Ajijic, a lakeside resort popular with American and Canadian retirees, where they were staying while the adoptions were finished.

Lawyers sought
Officials are investigating whether the Irish couples and Mexican mothers were being tricked by the smuggling ring.

The Irish Times reported that foreign affairs department officials were due to travel to Guadalajara to offer consular assistance to Irish couples who were adopting children in the Mexico.

"We will work with them and with the Mexican authorities," Minister for Foreign Affairs Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore told the Times.

The paper said 11 Irish couples had been interviewed by state prosecutors in Mexico.

Police are also looking for at least two lawyers with the Guadalajara law firm Lopez Lopez y Asociados who were allegedly processing the adoptions in neighboring Colima state.

The lawyers purportedly advertised in local newspaper for expectant mothers who wanted to give their children up for adoption.

Investigator said the foreign couples had been giving $1,200 pesos ($188 dollars) per week to the mothers since pregnancy, and paying for their medical attention.

Russian space probe descending to Earth

A failed Russian probe designed to travel to a moon of Mars but stuck in Earth orbit is due to come crashing down within the hour, creating a shower of fragments that could survive the fiery re-entry.

The unmanned Phobos-Grunt probe is one of the heaviest and most toxic space derelicts ever to crash to Earth, but space officials and experts say the risks are minimal, as its orbit is mostly over water and most of the probe's structure will burn up in the atmosphere anyway.

Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, said that Phobos-Grunt ("Phobos-Soil") will crash between 12:50 and 1:34 p.m. ET. Other sources suggested re-entry might come even earlier than that window. The probe could come down anywhere along an orbit that would place it over the Pacific Ocean, South America, the Pacific and southern Europe. The rest of the world, including the U.S. and Canada, is outside the risk zone.

"The resulting risk isn't significant," said Heiner Klinkrad, head of the European Space Agency's Space Debris Office that is monitoring the probe's descent.

He couldn't say where exactly the probe may enter the atmosphere, but said that "most of Europe is excluded from an impact risk."

Roscosmos predicts that only between 20 and 30 fragments of the Phobos probe with a total weight of up to 440 pounds (200 kilograms) will survive the re-entry and plummet to Earth.

Klinkrad agreed with that assessment, adding that about 100 metric tons of space junk fall on Earth every year. "This is 200 kilograms out of these 100 tons," he said.

Thousands of pieces of derelict space vehicles orbit Earth, occasionally posing danger to astronauts and satellites in orbit, but as far as is known, no one has ever been hurt by falling space debris.

Phobos-Grunt weighs 13.5 metric tons (14.9 English tons), and that includes a load of 11 metric tons (12 tons) of highly toxic rocket fuel intended for the long journey to the Martian moon of Phobos. It has been left unused as the probe got stuck in orbit around Earth shortly after its Nov. 9 launch.

Roscosmos says all of the fuel will burn up on re-entry, a forecast Klinkrad said was supported by calculations done by NASA and ESA. He said the craft's tanks are made of aluminum alloy that has a very low melting temperature, and they will burst at an altitude of more than 60 miles (100 kilometers).

"These tanks are expected to release the fuel above 100 kilometers, and then the fuel is going to burn in the atmosphere and later the tanks are going to burn up themselves as well," Klinkrad told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from his office in Berlin.

The space era has seen far larger spacecraft to crash. NASA's Skylab space station that went down in 1979 weighed 85 tons (77 metric tons), and Russia's Mir space station that deorbited in 2001 weighed about 143 tons (130 metric tons). Their descent fueled fears around the world, but the wreckage of both fell far away from populated areas.

The $170 million Phobos-Ground was Russia's most expensive and the most ambitious space mission since Soviet times. The spacecraft was intended to land on the crater-dented, potato-shaped Martian moon, collect soil samples and fly them back to Earth, giving scientists precious materials that could shed more light on the genesis of the solar system.

Russia's space chief has acknowledged the Phobos-Ground mission was ill-prepared, but said that Roscosmos had to give it the go-ahead so as not to miss the limited Earth-to-Mars launch window.

Its predecessor, Mars-96, which was built by the same Moscow-based NPO Lavochkin company, also suffered an engine failure and crashed shortly after its launch in 1996. Its crash drew strong international fears because there were 7 ounces (200 grams) of plutonium onboard. The craft eventually showered its fragments over the Chile-Bolivia border in the Andes Mountains, and the pieces were never recovered.

The worst ever radiation spill from a derelict space vehicle came in January 1978 when the nuclear-powered Cosmos 954 satellite crashed over northwestern Canada. The Soviets claimed that the craft completely burned up on re-entry, but a massive recovery effort by Canadian authorities recovered a dozen fragments, most of which were radioactive.

Phobos-Grunt also contains a tiny quantity of radioactive cobalt-57 in one of its instruments, but Roscosmos said it poses no threat of radioactive contamination.

The spacecraft also carries a small cylinder with a collection of microbes as part of an experiment by the California-based Planetary Society that designed to explore whether they can survive interplanetary travel. The cylinder is attached to a capsule that was supposed to deliver Phobos ground samples back to Earth.

It's not clear whether or not that capsule would be destroyed during re-entry, but the chances that it will ever be found are extremely low.

Pakistani court orders contempt notice against PM (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's Supreme Court ramped up the pressure on the nation's beleaguered government Monday, beginning contempt proceedings against the prime minister for failing to carry out its order to reopen a corruption case against the president.

The court ordered Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to appear on Thursday to explain his refusal to reopen the graft investigation, injecting fresh uncertainty into the political crisis threatening to engulf the country. If the court convicts Gilani of contempt, he could serve up to six months in prison and be disqualified from holding office.

The government already is locked in a bitter conflict with the army, and Monday's Supreme Court ruling boosted the sense the administration could fall, squeezed between the court and Pakistan's powerful generals. The government is also grappling with an ailing economy and a dangerous Taliban insurgency.

The escalating political crisis is a deep concern for the U.S., which is worried about instability in the nuclear-armed country and also needs the government's help with the war in neighboring Afghanistan.

"The Supreme Court and the government are in an open clash now, and it seems fairly obvious the court is unwilling to back off," said Cyril Almeida, a columnist for Dawn newspaper.

"Once the Supreme Court, the army and the political opposition agree the government needs to go sooner rather than later, it seems very difficult for the government to stay on," Almeida told The Associated Press.

Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters later in the day that the prime minister would appear before the court on Thursday as ordered.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to ask Swiss authorities to reopen a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari that dates back to the 1990s and involves the jurisdiction of the Swiss courts. The government has refused, saying Zardari has immunity, and supporters say the court is pursuing a vendetta against the country's civilian leadership.

The government also is at odds with the army over an unsigned memo delivered to Washington last year offering the U.S. a raft of favorable security policies in exchange for its help in thwarting a supposed military coup.

The army was outraged by the memo and pushed the Supreme Court to open an inquiry into the scandal, against the government's wishes. Some observers believe the court's pressure on the graft case is being orchestrated by the military to put maximum strain on the government.

Pakistan has long been plagued by tension between the civilian government and the army, which has seized power in three coups since the country was founded in 1947. The government has given the generals control over foreign and security policy, but the civilian leadership and the top brass have never seen eye-to-eye since Zardari and Gilani took office in 2008.

The head of the Supreme Court, Mohammad Iftikhar Chaudhry, has also clashed with Zardari.

The court initiated contempt proceedings against Gilani on Monday after the government failed to respond to an order outlining a series of punitive options the judges could take if the government did not reopen the case against Zardari. Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the court he had not received instructions from the country's leaders on how to respond to the order.

The government has vowed to see out its term, scheduled to end in 2013, and oversee elections ? something that has never happened in the country's history. But the crisis threatens to upend that, and some lawmakers in Zardari's party speculate that elections could be called earlier to try to ease tensions.

Gilani criticized the army last week for cooperating with the Supreme Court probe into the memo scandal. He has said the standoff is nothing less than a choice between "democracy and dictatorship." Gilani's comments followed a warning from the generals of possible "grievous consequences" ahead.

Zardari has been vulnerable to prosecution since 2009 when the Supreme Court struck down an amnesty granting him and other leading political figures immunity from past graft cases. The court deemed the amnesty, which was granted in 2008, unconstitutional.

The court has zeroed in on one corruption investigation taken up by the Swiss government against Zardari that was halted in 2008 when Pakistani prosecutors, acting on the amnesty, told Swiss authorities to drop the case.

Internet TV: Another Reason To Like Frontier Communications ...

I have written several articles about Frontier Communications (FTR), including one where I recommended Frontier with its dividend yield of nearly 15% as a top income idea for 2012. I thought I was quite knowledgeable about the company and understood its business, progress on integrating the assets it acquired from Verizon (VZ), the dividend policy, free cash flow and the importance of broadband to its future. The following description of its business taken directly from the company's website was included in an early August article:

...The largest pure rural telecommunications carrier in the United States whose services "include voice, high-speed Internet, satellite video, wireless Internet data access, data security solutions, bundled offerings, specialized bundles for small businesses and home offices, and advanced business communications Access Solutions for medium and large businesses."

The current description on the Frontier website has changed slightly and now reads, in part:

...The nation's largest provider of communications services focused on rural America, offering Broadband, Phone, Satellite television, wireless Internet data access, PC security solutions and technical support, Internet-based television, carrier services, specialized bundles for small businesses and home offices, and advanced business communications for medium, large and commercial businesses in 27 states.

So what happened and what did I miss? During the first half of November, the company issued eight press releases. Like many investors, I was focused on those about the third quarter earnings, the dividend, the AT&T wireless agreement and future analyst conference presentations. Earlier this week while looking for information on the fourth quarter earnings release and conference call I was puzzled by a headline on the Frontier page on Seeking Alpha: TumTiki.com Offers Three Sweepstakes Tied to Popular Showtime TV Series. I'm a sucker for sweepstakes and a chance to win something despite the fact that I'm more likely to be struck by lightning. TumTiki.com? It seemed like a dumb name, and I had to wonder what it had to do with Frontier.

I totally missed the November 7th headline TumTiki, from Frontier Communications, Launches with Largest Online Library of TV Episodes, Movies, Local Content, Clips and Original Web Series. And a subtitle "TumTiki.com features more than 700,000 free TV episodes, movies, original web series, professionally-produced clips and local programming; with premium movies and episodes for rental." TumTiki.com is the reason there is an additional phrase in the revised business description "Internet-based television." And despite the two press releases, it appears to be a very low key launch.

The company has partnered with Hulu and Amazon.com (AMZN) for content, with pay per view or movie purchases sent to the Amazon.com site. Despite these partnerships, neither site makes any mention of TumTiki. A Google search for "Internet TV" shows paid placements by Hulu and Apple, but none by Frontier for TumTiki. There has been no mention of TumTiki during the recent investor conferences, and it does not appear to have been promoted by Frontier outside of the sweepstakes (although I'm not a customer of Frontier, so it is possible that they included inserts in their monthly bills). Very low key.

It would certainly seem to be a good deal for both Amazon.com and Hulu since they should both garner more web traffic. In Hulu's case the traffice should result in greater ad revenue. For Amazon.com, it's even better. According to a Paywall Times article, all the TumTiki paid premium content is driven to the Amazon.com site. In return for the exclusive arrangement, the article speculates:

We presume Frontier has negotiated a much larger cut of the resulting income than Amazon's normal 7-8% affiliate commission structure.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that as part of the Amazon agreement, TumTiki receives a portion of the revenue Amazon generates on each transaction and that Frontier expects the site to eventually become supported by ads. The free content comes with the requisite commercials, but it appears unlikely the site is currently accretive to earnings.

To the extent that TumTiki can be used as a selling point for Frontier to sign up more broadband customers, it's a pretty good idea for two reasons. First, average revenue per customer increases. Second, customers that purchase broadband bundled with other services tend to have lower churn rates. Only time will tell if another Internet TV site is necessary and ultimately accretive to earnings.

Summary

This particular program in no way alters my prior recommendation about Frontier or the sustainability of its dividend. And while it may be understandable how a press release and product launch could get overlooked... Well, ignorance may be bliss, but it really isn't much of an excuse.

Disclosure: I am long FTR, VZ.

Additional disclosure: I occasionally day trade FTR and I may add to my positions in Frontier and/or initiate a covered call strategy at any time. I have no plans to trade any of the other stocks mentioned in this article.
