DefaultGalaxy Tab 2 can only log on if laptop is logged on

I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, and use my Comcast wireless Wi-Fi. Starting three weeks ago, I have been unable to log onto my network with the Tab. IF I log on with my laptop first, I can ALWAYS then log onto my Tab. It will not accept my password which I reset about a year ago. It now displays "Authorization Error Occurred." Does anyone know why this has started? Will a factory reset solve this? Thanks!!

Shootout in Nigerian capital with Boko Haram

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) ? A shootout between Islamic extremists and Nigerian security forces rocked the nation's capital early Friday, according to a Nigerian security official.

It is the first violence from the Islamic radicals of Boko Haram in Abuja this year and highlights Nigeria's continuing security problems from the extremists.

The gunfight in the capital occurred as Nigerian officials were recovering bodies in Benisheik, in northern Nigeria, where 143 civilians were killed by suspected Boko Haram fighters. The killings in Benisheik took place on Tuesday and represent one of the highest death tolls in the Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria.

Together the gunfight in the capital and the mass killings in the northeast challenge the Nigerian military's insistence that it is winning the war against the extremists since a state of emergency was declared May 14.

The Islamic radicals of Boko Haram want to enforce strict Shariah law throughout Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation of more than 160 million people almost equally divided between Muslims and Christians. Boko Haram is blamed for violent attacks that have killed nearly 2,000 in Nigeria since 2011.

The shooting in the capital broke out early Friday when a security team was searching for hidden weapons and it was fired upon by members of Boko Haram, said a statement issued Friday by Marilyn Ogar, Deputy Director of the Department of State Services.

Two arrested members of Boko Haram had led a security team in Abuja to a site near the residential compound for legislators where they said arms were buried, said Ogar.

"No sooner had the team commenced digging for the arms than they came under heavy gunfire attack by other Boko Haram elections," said Ogar's statement.

Some people were injured but did not say there had been any deaths, she said. She said 12 people were arrested.

Boko Haram's violence occurs mostly in Nigeria's northern areas although there have been some serious incidents in the capital.

In August 2011 a Boko Haram suicide car bomb exploded at the United Nations offices in Abuja, killing 24 people. In April 2012 the Abuja office of the newspaper, This Day, was hit by a car bomb and two people were killed.

In northeastern Nigeria, officials on Thursday recovered 143 bodies in the town of Benisheik after an attack on Tuesday by a large, heavily armed group suspected to be Boko Haram.

Two soldiers and three police officers also were killed, according to a soldier who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The private said extremists disguised in military fatigues attacked in about 20 pickup trucks and two light tanks firing anti-aircraft guns that overwhelmed soldiers armed only with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

"We had to retreat to our base to reinforce after running out of ammunition. We had to run for our lives," said the private, who said he hid in a millet plantation. "But they followed us down and surrounded our base and began to shell our building. We couldn't stand the heat of their superior firepower. We had to retreat into the village after they killed two of our soldiers and three policemen."

He said the attackers finally retreated in triumph, taking off with an additional four military patrol trucks and two light armored tanks.

An AP reporter watched as Environmental Department workers piled corpses swollen by the tropical heat into trucks at the near-deserted village where hundreds of homes had been torched.

"We have been picking corpses off the roadsides all day, there are more in the bush ... We have so far picked up 143 corpses," said Abdulazeez Kolomi, an assistant at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Villager Abacha Wakil said the gunmen invaded the town at about 7.45 p.m. Tuesday and did not leave until about 3.30 a.m. Wednesday. When residents ventured back to the village from the bushes where they spent the night they discovered the beheaded bodies of 14 young men, most belonging to a vigilante group set up to fight the extremists, he said.

Army Brig. Gen. Muhammed Idris Yusuf pleaded with the villagers to not lose confidence in the military. "We share your pain and we promise to beef up the presence of soldiers around Benisheik," he said. "We have not abandoned you as you think: Our troops ran out of ammunition and that was why they withdrew to reinforce. They are now back and more are coming."

Microsoft sees phones as the future of Windows RT

One of the big changes in Microsoft's recent reorg is the merging of the traditional Windows business with Windows Phone. While Microsoft has long promised a "common app platform" between the two, the company has placed Terry Myerson, former Windows Phone chief, in charge of the newly formed operating systems group. Myerson took to the stage during Microsoft's financial analysts meeting yesterday to detail his thoughts on the future of Windows RT and a promise of common apps and developer tools across Windows and Windows Phone.

"All of the apps we bring to end users should be available on all of our devices."

Myerson says Microsoft is organizing its OS groups around three key beliefs: commonality, the cloud, and tailored experiences for devices. "The first of those is that we really should have one silicon interface for all of our devices," says Myerson. "We should have one set of developer APIs on all of our devices. And all of the apps we bring to end users should be available on all of our devices." The promise of all apps available across all devices is one that Microsoft has merely hinted at previously, without committing to specifics. While Myerson didn't extend further, it's clear Microsoft is finally working on ensuring a Windows Phone app could run on a Windows 8 tablet in the same way that an iPhone app can run on an iPad.

"The second belief was that all of our devices are becoming more cloud-powered," explains Myerson. "So whether we're branding them Windows or Xbox, we really need one core service which is enabling all of our devices." This core service sounds like the same "service-enabled shell" that Steve Ballmer has discussed previously, and one that Bing will likely play a huge role in. The third belief is that while Microsoft using a common Live Tiles interface across Windows, Xbox, and Windows Phone, the experience needs to be tailored per device. "We want to facilitate the creation of a common, a familiar experience across all of those devices, but a fundamentally tailored and unique experience for each device," says Myerson.

While these are all promises for the future of Windows, Microsoft had big plans for its Windows RT operating system before it debuted last year.?A "no compromise" experience across multiple manufacturers was promised, but a year on and there's little sign of any future Windows RT devices from manufacturers.?Samsung has dropped out,?Nvidia isn't impressed, and it looks like Nokia might be the only brave ally alongside Microsoft's upcoming Surface 2. While?Microsoft has previously defended RT, Myerson didn't address the lack of Windows RT devices from PC manufacturers, but he did provide hints at Microsoft's vision for the future of ARM-powered Windows devices.

"And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future.

"The ARM devices in particular in phones have incredible share given their battery life and the connectivity options available with the system-on-a-chip ecosystem," says Myerson. "Windows RT was our first ARM tablet. And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future."?Nokia's 6-inch Lumia 1520, expected to be unveiled next month, will likely be the first example of Windows Phone extending into larger devices.?It appears that Microsoft sees the future of RT in phones, but it's not immediately clear how Windows Phone and Windows RT will merge, or when.?On the subject of progression overall with Windows, Myerson notes that the company is focused on executing quickly. "We have a very clear vision of what we want to get done, and we're moving very fast."

Study links space weather to satellite glitches

A study of satellite failures between 1996 and 2012 found that glitches tended to coincide with solar activity.?

High-speed eruptions of charged particles from the sun may be to blame for recent failures of satellites that people rely on to watch TV and use the Internet, scientists say.

From 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) away, the sun spawns solar flares, coronal mass ejections and other space weather events, which can send highly energized particles racing toward Earth. Some solar storms have been known to disrupt communications systems and damage satellites.

To better understand these disturbances, a team of MIT researchers investigated the?space weather?conditions at the time of 26 failures in eight geostationary satellites operated by the London-based company Inmarsat. Geostationary satellites orbit at the same rate as the Earth?s rotation, meaning they always hover above the same location on the planet. [The Sun's Wrath: Worst Solar Storms in History]

Most of the glitches, from 1996 to 2012, coincided with?high-energy electron?activity during declining phases of the solar cycle, the study found.

The researchers think these charged particles may have accumulated in the satellites over time. Despite protective shielding, the buildup likely caused internal charging that damaged the satellites' amplifiers, which are needed to strengthen and relay a signal back to Earth.?Over an extended mission, the researchers warn that this phenomenon could also cause the satellites' backup amplifiers to fail.?

"Once you get into a 15-year mission, you may run out of redundant amplifiers," study researcher Whitney Lohmeyer, a aeronautics and astronautics graduate student at MIT, said in a statement. "If a company has invested over $200 million in a satellite, they need to be able to assure that it works for that period of time. We really need to improve our method of quantifying and understanding the space environment, so we can better improve design."

Space weather can be much more dynamic than predicted by the models engineers use when crafting satellites, explained Kerri Cahoy, a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT.

"There are many different ways that charged particles can wreak havoc on your satellite's electronics," Cahoy said in a statement. "The hard part about satellites is that when something goes wrong, you don't get it back to do analysis and figure out what happened."

Lohmeyer and Cahoy's findings also suggest that some assumptions about?solar storms and space weather?risks may need to be revised. Researchers often take geomagnetic disturbances into consideration when assessing the vulnerability of spacecraft to space weather, according to a statement from MIT. But Lohmeyer found that most of the amplifier breakdowns occurred during times of low geomagnetic activity that would normally be considered safe.

"If we can understand how the environment affects these satellites, and we can design to improve the satellites to be more tolerant, then it would be very beneficial not just in cost, but also in efficiency," Lohmeyer added.

The team's research is detailed in the journal Space Weather.

Rapper Mack Maine charged with assault in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Oklahoma City prosecutors have filed felony charges against rapper Mack Maine following an alleged altercation with two women aboard a tour bus.

The 33-year-old Maine, whose real name is Jermaine Anthony Preyan, was charged Friday with aggravated assault and battery and sexual battery, according to court records.

Preyan, from New Orleans, is also the president of Young Money Entertainment, a record label founded by rapper Lil Wayne.

Preyan invited two women on to a tour bus on Aug. 22, an affidavit said, and grabbed one woman's right breast. It also says he held the door shut when the women tried to leave, and allegedly punched the second woman in the face as she walked down the bus steps, "breaking her jaw and knocking her down."

Preyan's attorney, Tony Coleman of Oklahoma City, would not comment on the charges Monday. No court date has been set.

The incident allegedly happened on the same day rapper 2 Chainz and 10 others were arrested after refusing to get off a tour bus for almost nine hours following a traffic stop in Oklahoma City. The "America's Most Wanted" tour featuring 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne and T.I. was in Oklahoma City on Aug. 21, according to the Chesapeake Energy Arena website.

2 Chainz, whose real name is Tauheed Epps, and the others were charged with obstructing a police officer, a misdemeanor.

An affidavit says a police officer pulled over the Atlanta-based rapper's tour bus on Interstate 40 because none of the rear taillights on the passenger side were working. The officer smelled marijuana when the driver, identified as Sedric A. Brooks, opened the bus door and "could actually see smoke inside the bus around the door," the affidavit said.

The officer then ordered Brooks back on the bus, the document said, after which Brooks "quickly shut the door" and said he wasn't authorized to let the officer in.

Police eventually obtained a search warrant and discovered two semi-automatic pistols and a 12-gauge pump shotgun along with some prescription painkillers and marijuana residue on the tour bus.

Microsoft marketing head Tami Reller speaks this week at IDF.

Microsoft launched the preview version of Windows 8.1 in June, and earlier this week it allowed TechNet and MSDN subscribers to access the RTM build of the Windows 8 update. This week, during a keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum, Microsoft's marketing head Tami Reller told the crowd there had been over 2 million downloads of Windows 8.1 so far.

The transcript of the keynote speech doesn't show that Reller offered any more info on that statistic. so we don't know if the 2 million number is just for the preview version or if Microsoft is also counting the RTM bits it offered to developers this week. We have emailed Microsoft for more information. Of course, we are sure those download numbers don't include any that come from the leaked preview or RTM Windows 8.1 versions that have made their way online.

One interesting Windows 8.1 statistic comes from the Steam hardware survey page. Valve allows customers who download the Steam client a way to voluntarily upload their hardware and software data for the survey. The month of August shows that Windows 8.1 was installed on 0.45 percent of PCs with Steam. That's a small number, but it's still higher on the survey list than all of the Linux-based operating systems that support Steam.

Rice is Top Texas University in U.S. News Ranking

This year?s U.S. News & World Report ranking of the nation?s top colleges and universities only featured one Texas school ? Rice University at No. 18 ? in the top 50. One former member of the top 50, the University of Texas at Austin, dropped from last year?s ranking of 46 to the 52nd spot this year.

Also dropping in the ranking, which came out Tuesday, were Southern Methodist University (from 58 to 60) and Texas A&M University (65 to 69). ?

Baylor University remained in the 75th spot, and Texas Christian University moved up from the 92nd spot last year to 82nd. Other Texas universities that rose in the ranking include the University of Texas at Dallas, which moved from 151 to 142, and Texas Tech University, 165 to 161. The University of Houston was ranked 190.

For its college rankings, U.S. News uses measures that are based on 16 indicators of academic excellence. Analysts Robert Morse and Sam Flannigan worked on the ranking, which assigns a certain weight to each factor based on the analysts? judgment. The colleges and universities are then ranked against one another.

This year, the U.S. News assessment changed how it analyzed data for the rankings. The primary change was reducing the impact of students? standardized ACT and SAT scores, which this year counted for 12.5 percent of a university?s ranking, a drop from last year?s 15 percent.

UT-Austin?s drop was largely tied to its graduation rates.

Asked about UT-Austin?s dip, Tara Doolittle, the university?s director of media outreach, said, ?We have been working on improving our graduation rates for a year through a campaign. We did not change in performance, and we do not plan to change.?

Other factors in the ranking include academic reputation, which refers to the opinions of a university from top academics outside the school and accounts for 22.5 percent of the overall ranking. Graduation data, which includes the number of freshman students who returned for their sophomore year and overall graduation rates, counted for 30 percent. Twenty percent was based on how satisfied students were with faculty members. Financial resources ?? which involved school resources for student programs and services ? accounted for 10.5 percent.

The U.S. News rankings diverge sharply from Washington Monthly?s list, which came out last week.

In that list Texas A&M University ranked No. 3, and the University of Texas at El Paso ? which was unranked in U.S. News ?ranked seventh.

Washington Monthly's methodology is based more on the recruitment and graduation percentage of low-income students as well as on of scholarship and Ph.D.'s, and it examines how the school encourages students to give back to the country.

?The U.S News and World Report rankings are heavily weighted towards such prestige criteria as endowment size and alumni giving and are thus more attuned to smaller, elite private universities,? said Howard Daudistel, UTEP?s senior executive vice president. ?In contrast, the Washington Monthly rankings, which placed UTEP as No. 7 in the nation in between Stanford and Harvard, seek to capture an institution?s impact on the students it serves, on the region in which is located and on the nation as a whole.?
